Drive at 16 Whilst you cannot legally drive a car on the road before your 17th birthday, we are able to provide driving lessons for 16 year olds. At the Devon Driver's Centre at Westpoint, Exeter, there is a practice road circuit that we are able to use for teaching. We are able to offer single lessons at the circuit for 16 year olds, or structured courses to provide many of the key driving skills. The confidence gained from having already learnt to control the car in a safe, controlled environment really shows in quick progress by the pupil after their 17th birthday when we can get onto the roads. Although there is generally very little traffic to contend with on the circuit, there are usually a few other driving school cars present so observation and awareness skills are developed along with the core car control skills. The circuit provides a variety of challenges including 'T' junctions, uphill and downhill starts (and stops!), opportunities for reversing and even 'traffic lights', a pedestrian crossing (although usually without pedestrians) and even a roundabout. |
